We are big fans of Oliver’s Market. They carry many local products at very reasonable prices. Here are 5 items that you should buy when you go to Oliver’s:
1) Humboldt Grassfed Beef
Grass-fed beef contains more Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA), a powerful antioxidant, than grain-fed beef. CLAs are known to increase metabolic rate, help muscle growth, lower cholesterol and triglycerides, lower insulin resistance, enhance immune system and reduce food-induced allergic reactions.
Grass-fed beef also contains up to 5 times more Omega-3s ANNNNND contains more Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Iron, Zinc, Potassium, Phosphorus and Sodium than grain-fed.
So, as you can see it, is a bit better for us nutritionally. It doesn’t stop there though!
Grass-fed (pasture-raised) cattle are also better for the environment than conventionally/grain-fed cattle. The feedlots that hold grain-fed cattle are over-crowded, the grain that they are fed contains soy and corn (often GMO), and the cattle are given antibiotics to fight off the problems they develop from eating grain, which is not their natural diet. What a mess.
100% Grass-fed cattle graze freely on the pastures where they were born and contribute to a sustainable ecosystem – – hands down better choice for the earth and for your health.

2) SeaSnax Roasted Seaweed
Marine vegetables are a superfood and rich source of nutrients like Vitamin K, Calcium, Iodine and Iron, Magnesium, Potassium, Zinc, Copper and Selenium. Seaweed has also been found to be great for digestive health and is high in Omega-3s.
SeaSnax brand is a small, family-run business that sources sustainably produced and harvested non-GMO seaweed, and is the brand we are aware of that uses a good fat (olive oil, rather than corn or canola) and no added other stuff (like sugar or soy or preservatives).
3) Traditional Medicinals Nighty-Night Tea
Everyone knows and values the importance of a good night’s sleep. Sleep is essential to repairing and recharging our bodies and minds, and is a key component of recovery from your workouts and the everyday stresses of life.
And yet we talk to so many people who don’t sleep well and have difficulty falling asleep, or wake in the night and then can’t get back to sleep. If that’s you, try some Nighty-Night tea from Traditional Medicinals, a great local company that uses high quality, sustainably-produced herbs in their teas. (The key ingredient in Nighty-Night is Valerian, so you could always try brewing your own.)
4) Epic Animal Fats
We recently shared a guest post with you from Tiana Kraus, FDN of Three Leaves Foods on the benefits of lard: Oh Lardy Lardy! In a nutshell, lard is heart-healthy, neutral flavored, economical, high in Vitamin D, good for cholesterol, and great for baking. Don’t have time to render your own lard? No worries, Oliver’s Market carries Epic pork lard, ready for you to use, along with beef tallow and the highly-coveted, flavorful duck fat.
For years I have told our clients to seek a rancher at the farmer’s market that is producing these fats. Our great-grandparents would only have used these fats, but they disappeared from mainstream use for a while…and now we can get them in the grocery store?! Wow, progress!
5) Sonoma Brinery Sauerkraut
Fermented foods contain “good” bacteria that can work wonders for your digestive health. The fermentation process pre-digests the food for you, making it easier for your stomach to digest and for your body to absorb the nutrients. Studies have shown that fermented foods, in addition to improving gut health, can also help reverse inflammation, allergies and autoimmune disorders.
Making your own fermented foods is pretty simple and affordable, but if you aren’t a DIY-er, check out Sonoma Brinery’s ‘krauts, curtido, and pickles. There are many great brands of fermented foods in this refrigerated section, and you can and should try any of them. We recommend Sonoma Brinery here because they’re local and offered at a fantastic price. Try their Wild West dill pickles, which are really delicious!
