Custom Programming at SRSC helped me to run my best race yet!

Way to go, Dan!

After his first Spartan Race – almost 2 years ago – Dan came to SRSC to train so that he would be better conditioned for future performance (read his story here). It’s no surprise that he immediately saw improvement.

But can you continue to see improvement, even over several years? Dan ran another race this month, his sixth one, two years after he first started training at SRSC.

How’d he do?

Heading into the Lake Tahoe 2016 Spartan Sprint, I didn’t do any special training.  However, the programming and coaching at SRSC kept me prepared.  It’s ironic that my best placing Spartan race was also the one I trained the least for and I believe the methodical, focused training plans from SRSC kept me on my game.

My overall routine was to target for 2 days of Custom Programming training (which was mostly strength work) and two days of Conditioning class, leaving time for one day of trail running in Annadel, usually 5-7 miles with hills on the weekend.  Travel, work and family being what it is, I stuck with the training about 70% of the time, but I made sure never to compromise on rest and recovery.  I always made time for sleep and in the weeks leading up to the race, I took nutrition seriously – even participating in SRSCs Fall Nutritional Challenge.

When the race started, a mile in, I knew things were going well.  The run felt pretty good, despite the altitude.  I easily made it past all of the obstacles but one (the multirig which gets just about everyone).  With only 30 burpees as penalty on this race, I set several PRs – my fastest Spartan to date, my highest ranking overall, my highest ranking in my age group and the least number of burpee penalties.

Headed home from the race, I felt inspired by the accomplishment.

And we are inspired by you, Dan, and all that you have learned about yourself, about proper training, and especially about recovery. We’re proud to be part of your fitness journey and look forward to helping you continue to development as an athlete.

Congratulations, and onward!
