Congrats to October Member of the Month, Marvin!
Why did you decide to join SRSC?
I joined SRSC because I wanted to try something different. During the second half of 2016, I spent a majority of my work week down in San Jose. While in San Jose there were lots of happy hour meetings and working dinners that I attended. The hotel gym was inadequate for my needs and by the end of the year I was 210lbs. In 2017 I decided to get back into shape and I worked out consistently at 24 Hour Fitness leading up to my 40th birthday. Four months into 2017 I was unhappy with my results. The gains weren’t coming as fast as they once did and I felt like I had hit a plateau with my workouts. I needed a change but I wasn’t sure what. As fate would have it, prior to my birthday there was an ad for the 30 day jumpstart program that I saw on Facebook late one night and I decided to sign up. It was one of the best decisions that I have made. Not only have I seen results, but the community and the facilities are great. I feel challenged, stimulated, and in my workouts physically and mentally. SRSC has helped to rekindle my passion for fitness and going to the gym!
What has been your most memorable achievement since becoming a member?
My most memorable achievement since becoming a member is being able to back squat 315lbs! Prior to joining SRSC, I had never squatted heavy. I think that 225lbs is the most I had ever attempted to squat prior to coming here. I lacked the confidence, the knowledge, and the spotters to accomplish such a feat. In a relatively short amount of time at SRSC, I saw my strength dramatically increase and I gained way more confidence with performing the back squat movement. In trying to keep pace with the people working out around me, and with some encouragement from Coach Nikee, I kept pushing myself. Before I knew it was squatting in the high 200s without much difficulty. So I set a goal of 315lbs for the last day of my 6 week program that had back squat as one of my exercises. It was tremendously exciting to reach that goal!!
Favorite and least favorite exercises?
Favorite exercises: any push exercises LOL
1) Bench Press
2) Back squats
3) Strict press
Least favorite exercises:
1) I don’t have any least favorite exercises. If I don’t like an exercise, its usually because I’m not good at it. So at the moment I’m struggling with cleans off the box.
2) I have noticed that I’m not as strong at pulling exercises so I tend to struggle with those and I am currently working on improving in that area.
What’s something that your gym mates would be surprised to know about you?
I am a huge foodie! I love going out to eat, I love cooking, and I obsessively watch the Food Network and other various cooking shows. One day I hope to go to culinary school just to become a better home cook.
